Clinical Informatics combines traditional bedside nursing skills with advanced 21st century healthcare information technology – an approach that is both “high touch” and “high tech” – to achieve the best patient outcomes.
Baptist Health South Florida’s Clinical Informatics team consists of highly trained clinicians, who help leverage our investment in technology across Baptist Health. Some examples of current Clinical Informatics projects at Baptist Health include:
- Electronic Patient Care Documentation System (PCDS) – All clinical assessments, notes, plans of care, and patient education are electronic, enabling the clinicians to access the real-time data anytime, anywhere across Baptist Health.
- Bar-Coded Medication Administration (BCMA) – An ultimate patient safety net, BCMA includes wristband with a unique barcode identifier for every Baptist Health patient. Additionally, all medications are also bar-coded at the unit level, allowing the nurse to scan both the patient and the medication each time a dose is administered. This cutting-edge technology protects patient safety as well as improving medication accuracy, minimizing errors and generating an electronic medication record.
- Computerized Provider Order Management (CPOM) – Our medical providers of care enter patient-specific orders electronically, via computers, which reduces handwriting-related errors, eliminates delays in transcription, and expedites communication to various departments such as pharmacy, laboratory and imaging services.
- eICU LifeGuard – Working from a remote location, specially trained critical-care physicians and nurses electronically monitor every Baptist Health ICU patient’s medical condition 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This unique telemedicine application serves as an extra “safety net” for all our ICU patients.
- Patient and Family Portal – After discharge, patients are able to electronically access their patient records, as well as discharge instructions online.
The ultimate goal of the Clinical Informatics department at Baptist Health is to enable clinicians to use informatics tools, principles, theories and practices to make healthcare safer, drive more efficient clinical workflow and support an evidence-based, patient-centered care model.
