Your provider may use medical imaging tests to create your personalized treatment plan. An X-ray is a quick and painless test that takes images of the inside of your body, most often of your bones.

There are three types of X-rays: dental X-rays for teeth, chest X-rays for the abdomen and extremity X-rays for arms and legs. Your provider may order an X-ray to get a closer look at conditions such as:

  • Arthritis
  • Bone cancer
  • Bone fractures
  • Bone growth progress
  • Bone loss (osteoporosis)
  • Breast cancer
  • Digestive problems
  • Heart disease
  • Lung infections

At Baptist Health, you can expect an X-ray experience that is:

  • High-quality. Our X-ray machines produce detailed images that providers rely on to form an accurate diagnosis. High-quality images lead to high-quality care.
  • Convenient. Choose from one of our many locations close to where you live.
  • Friendly. Our team can answer all of your questions so you know what to expect. Board-certified radiologists and technologists guide you through the process and prioritize your comfort, safety and positive experience.

What is an X-ray?

An X-ray imaging test sends beams of electromagnetic radiation through your body. Your denser tissues, such as bones, absorb more of those rays. Their density causes them to show up white on an X-ray image. Less dense tissues like fat and muscle absorb less X-rays and look gray.

What does X-ray stand for?

The scientist who first discovered X-rays used “x” to convey that it was an unknown type of radiation at the time. Today, we continue to call this type of radiation X-rays.

What can I expect at my X-ray appointment?

When you call to schedule your X-ray appointment, our staff will give you instructions and ask questions about your health history. They can also answer any questions you have about getting an X-ray. Here’s what you can generally expect at your X-ray appointment.

  • Before you get your X-ray, you can continue to eat, drink and take your medications as usual unless instructed otherwise. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes. Leave metal accessories or jewelry at home as they can interfere with the X-ray. Let your technologist know if you have any metal implants. If you need to change clothes or remove items, Baptist Health provides gowns and lockers for your convenience.

Once you’re ready, your technologist will bring you back to the X-ray room. There, they will ask you some basic health questions before your scan.

  • Your X-ray technologist will give you directions on how to position yourself. For example, if you’re getting an X-ray of your chest, you would stand. Patients getting an X-ray of their hand or wrist usually sit and place their arm on a table. If you’re getting an X-ray of your pelvis, you’ll likely lie down on a table. If applicable, the technologist will give you a lead apron to shield other areas of your body from the radiation. They’ll ask you to remain still while they take the images.

  • After your X-ray, you’ll get dressed and leave with no interruption to your daily activities.

You can expect to see your results in 24 to 48 hours. Our board-certified radiologists will interpret your test results and send them to your physician. You can see them at the same time through The Baptist Health PineApp.

What are the risks or side effects of an X-ray?

Your Baptist Health team will do everything possible to ensure you have a comfortable and safe X-ray.

During the X-ray imaging test, you are exposed to a very low dose of radiation. However, the benefits of the test outweigh the risks. Exposure to radiation carries a risk of causing cancer in the future, but clinical experts believe this risk is very small during an X-ray. Most patients do not experience any side effects from getting an X-ray.

Tell your provider if you are pregnant or think you could be pregnant. Medical experts recommend avoiding any radiation, including X-rays, during pregnancy.

How do I get an X-ray?

You’ll need a prescription from your provider to get an X-ray. Once your provider gives you a prescription, you can call Baptist Health Imaging to schedule your appointment.

How much does an X-ray cost?

The cost of your X-ray will depend on your insurance. After your provider prescribes an X-ray, our Pre-registration and Authorization Department will confirm the price with you.

If your insurance does not cover your X-ray, you can choose to self-pay. Our Central Pricing Office will work with you to arrange your payment schedule.
