Any Baptist Health staff member may use the library for the improvement of the quality of care of patients. Its services support patient care, evidence based practice, continuing education, research and publications. All staff have access to the physical libraries at South Miami, West Kendall, Homestead Hospital, Miami Cancer Institute, and Bethesda Hospital East. Internet is also available in each library.

Services include:

  • Literature searches on Ovid MEDLINE, CINAHL, ClinicalKey, and other evidence-based health and business databases. Literature search requests are filled within 24-48 hours.
  • Journal articles delivered by email, photocopy, mail, or fax. Articles are sourced from our own collection and/or through our membership in NNLM, the National Library of Medicine’s nationwide network of university and medical center libraries. Article requests are filled within 24-48 hours.
  • Access to an authoritative and comprehensive collection of e-resources including: clinical e-journals and e-books (2,000+ titles), and bibliographic databases such as ClinicalKey, Ovid MEDLINE, CINAHL, and UpToDate.
  • Formatted reference lists for citations.
  • 24/7 access to library e-resources from anywhere via the OpenAthens portal. Registering for an OpenAthens account must be done on a Baptist Health network connected computer. (Request Access | Login)
  • Circulation and interlibrary loan of books and DVDS for ongoing learning.
  • Customized training on a variety of topics (Examples: accessing library resources, literature search skills, using EndNote software to organize and format citations).
  • Current awareness email alerts: Journal tables of contents and/or topic alerts.
  • Hosting of publications from BHSF employees and affiliates and a professional-grade peer-reviewed journal (Nursing & Health Sciences Research Journal) on Scholarly Commons.
  • Patients, families, and their visitors may use the medical libraries to access reliable supplemental patient education information. Library staff will assist in identifying and providing information, but they are not practicing health professionals and will not interpret information or give advice.

    OVID Electronic Medical Library

    Links users to Ovid Medline, EBM Reviews - Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Ovid Emcare, Ovid Nursing Database, HealthSTAR & full text books and journals.

    ClinicalKey

    Elsevier’s search engine and database of peer-reviewed, medical and surgical content including over 1,100 e-books, 600 e-journals, and thousands of drug monographs, patient information handouts, procedures videos, and images. Graphs and images can be downloaded for use in presentations.

    ClinicalKey for Nursing

    Search engine and database of peer-reviewed, evidence-based nursing resources. Includes access to Mosby's Nursing Skills, 60+ books across a variety of nursing topics, 50+ nursing journals, and other tools including evidence-based monographs (with levels of evidence), videos, images, patient education, calculators, and more.

    CINAHL & Health Business Elite

    CINAHL provides comprehensive coverage of nursing and allied health disciplines. Health Business Elite provides comprehensive journal content detailing all aspects of health care administration.

    PubMed

    PubMed includes biomedical literature from MEDLINE, life science journals, and online books.

    Europe PMC

    Europe PMC is an open science platform that enables access to a worldwide collection of life science publications and preprints from trusted sources around the globe.

    New England Journal of Medicine

    The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) is a weekly general medical journal that publishes new medical research findings, review articles and editorial opinion on a wide variety of topics of importance to biomedical science and clinical practice.

    Rehabilitation Reference Center

    Evidence-based, point-of-care resource for physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists and rehabilitation professionals.

    UpToDate

    UpToDate is an evidence-based, physician-authored clinical decision support resource that contains thousands of clinical topics across 22 medical specialties, graphics, a complete drug information database and patient information handouts in a quick and easy-to-use format. Remote access is available from any computer with internet access and on mobile devices.

  • Check-out procedure

    Books, journals, videos, and audiocassettes may be borrowed for two weeks by medical and hospital staff members. Borrowers are requested to return materials on time; however, no fines will be charged.

    Reprints

    Article reprints are available to all hospital staff. Reprint requests are filled within 24-48 hours.

    Literature Searches

    Literature searches on evidence-based health and business databases are available to all hospital staff. Library staff will assist in identifying and providing supplemental patient education materials from reliable reputable consumer friendly resources. Search requests are filled within 24-48 hours.

    Photocopy

    Photocopies of articles are $.10 per page for anyone who is not an employee of Baptist Health.

    Interlibrary Loans

    Journal reprints are free to all Baptist Health medical and hospital staff members, if it is job related. Charges imposed by other libraries will be passed back to the individual requester or department, if it is a school project or personal project.

    Acquisitions & Gifts

    Staff members are encouraged to recommend current new titles for the library. Library leadership reviews the request for purchase. Gifts are accepted selectively, due to space limitations and the need for a current collection.

    National Library of Medicine
    • PubMed is a free resource supporting the search and retrieval of biomedical and life sciences literature. The PubMed database contains more than 32 million citations and abstracts of biomedical literature.
    • Medline Plus provides reliable health information for patients and consumers in English and Spanish.
    • Clinical Trials is a Web-based resource that provides patients, their family members, health care professionals, researchers, and the public with easy access to information on publicly and privately supported clinical studies on a wide range of diseases and conditions.
    • National Cancer Institute offers free, credible, and comprehensive information about cancer prevention and screening, diagnosis and treatment, research across the cancer spectrum, clinical trials, and news and links to other NCI websites.
    • Loansome Doc provides access to articles cited in Medline/PubMed.

    Search the Copyright Clearance Center database to verify that the reprint/article you are using is covered by Baptist Health's annual Copyright License.
