People living with stomas need specialized medical care. Our Wound and Ostomy Clinic offers treatment of chronic wounds that do not heal well or heal very slowly. We use proven, effective techniques to promote healing.

Our expert wound ostomy advanced practice registered nurse provides comprehensive care of stomas and any complications of peristomal skin (skin around the stoma). Our team will provide necessary education before surgery and ongoing follow-up care after.

What is a stoma?

A fecal or urinary stoma is a surgically created opening on your body that is connected to your digestive or urinary system. The stoma allows waste to be eliminated from the body. It can be permanent or temporary, depending on your unique situation and the disease process.

Approximately 120,000 stomas are created every year in the United States for a variety of reasons, including cancer and other nonmalignant conditions. Stomas require ongoing evaluation and care to prevent skin complications.

Stoma complications

Complications may happen immediately after surgery or at any point after a stoma is created. Common complications include:

  • Blockages
  • Hernias
  • Leakage due to ill-fitting appliances
  • Skin irritations
  • Retraction
