Our expert wound ostomy advanced practice registered nurse provides comprehensive care of stomas and any complications of peristomal skin (skin around the stoma). Our team will provide necessary education before surgery and ongoing follow-up care after.
What is a stoma?
A fecal or urinary stoma is a surgically created opening on your body that is connected to your digestive or urinary system. The stoma allows waste to be eliminated from the body. It can be permanent or temporary, depending on your unique situation and the disease process.
Approximately 120,000 stomas are created every year in the United States for a variety of reasons, including cancer and other nonmalignant conditions. Stomas require ongoing evaluation and care to prevent skin complications.

After surgery, we will teach you how to care for and access your stoma. We will evaluate your stoma to ensure it functions properly. We can also connect you with ostomy support groups and others who can help you adjust to living with a stoma.
