Vascular Surgery

This procedure is used to treat an aneurysm. Your surgeon replaces the damaged or diseased part of your aorta, to prevent it from rupturing and causing death.

These procedures are the most common treatment for peripheral arterial disease. During an angioplasty, your surgeon threads a long flexible tube (a catheter) carrying a small balloon through a needle puncture to the problem site. After blowing up the balloon to widen the blood vessel, they deflate and remove it. At the same time, your surgeon may implant a hollow, mesh tube (a stent) in your blood vessel to keep it upon permanently.

Your surgeon can use one of several procedures to repair or replace damaged blood vessels in your legs and feet.

This procedure creates an access point that enables your blood to run through a dialysis machine. During this procedure, your surgeon will create one of these access points:

• Fistula: Joining an artery and vein in your arm
• Graft: Using a piece of soft tube to join an artery and vein in your arm
• Catheter: A soft tube placed in a large vein, usually the neck

These are minimally invasive procedures. In an EVAR procedure, your surgeon threads a catheter through a small incision in your groin until it reaches the aneurysm that is in your abdomen. Using small, specially designed tools, they place a stent inside the aneurysm to prevent rupture. The TEVAR procedure is similar, but it is intended for aortic aneurysms in your chest. In both procedures, over time the aneurysm can shrink and reduce the risk of rupture.
