Your mitral valve is one of four valves in your heart. A properly working mitral valve moves blood in the right direction and prevents it from leaking back into your heart.
If your mitral valve becomes weak and can’t close completely ― a condition called mitral valve disease ― you may need a transcatheter mitral valve repair (TMVR).
The expert cardiothoracic surgeons at Baptist Health offer this minimally invasive procedure to replace your damaged mitral valve with a new, healthy valve. The team also offers MitraClip®, an implanted device used to help your mitral valve close more completely.
When Should You Get a Transcatheter Mitral Valve Repair?
Mitral valve diseases, like mitral valve regurgitation or mitral valve stenosis, can put stress on your heart. TMVR can alleviate that stress and associated symptoms, like shortness of breath, heart palpitations or swelling of the hands or feet.
Your doctor may recommend a TMVR if you:
- Have a condition like mitral valve regurgitation or mitral valve stenosis
- Cannot have traditional open-chest mitral valve repair or replacement surgery
The TMVR Procedure
"[After Surgery] I immediately felt much better. And I had a much easier time of breathing. I wasn’t as tired as I was prior to the surgery. I felt more energized. So, it was a very successful procedure as I was concerned."
