Sometimes, medication can be enough to treat a heart or vascular condition. Other times, you will need surgery. Our specialists have the expert skills and knowledge to perform the most advanced minimally invasive procedures to correct your issue. They are well versed in the leading-edge techniques and technologies that will give you the best possible outcomes.

What is Minimally Invasive Heart Surgery?

What is Minimally Invasive Heart Surgery?

Minimally invasive heart surgery is a less extensive approach to surgical heart care. In a traditional open-heart procedure, surgeons make a large cut called an incision down the middle of your chest. With a minimally invasive procedure, they make several small incisions between your ribs and use a small camera and special tools to fix your heart problem.

Benefits of Minimally Invasive Procedures

In addition to being as effective as traditional procedures, minimally invasive surgeries offer several other benefits. If your surgeon uses one of these less invasive techniques, you can experience:

  • Faster recovery time
  • Fewer physical restrictions after surgery
  • Less blood loss
  • Lower infection risk
  • Reduced pain after surgery
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Smaller, less visible scars

Our Minimally Invasive Heart Procedures

Our surgeons are trained in a wide range of minimally invasive techniques. They have performed thousands of these procedures and pioneered some of the surgeries that lead to a better experience for you. When you need surgery to fix your heart or vascular problem, you can be confident that you’ll receive the highest level of care from us.

Cardiac surgery can be complex — even a minimally invasive heart surgery. We are always available to answer any questions you have. This booklet also explains what you can expect from surgery and how to prepare.

Some of the minimally invasive heart surgeries we perform include:

Aortic Dissection Endovascular Repair

An aortic dissection is a tear in your aorta. It allows blood to flow into the layers of your blood vessel, reducing the amount of oxygen-rich blood that’s available for the rest of your body. To fix the tear, your surgeon makes a small incision in your leg. They use X-ray guidance to thread a catheter carrying a synthetic graft through your artery to the spot of your tear. They may use contrast dye to help them see the tear and better place the graft.

MICS CABG Surgery

Our Chief of Cardiac Surgery, Joseph McGinn, M.D., pioneered this minimally invasive coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) procedure. During the surgery, your surgeon makes three small incisions instead of a single large one. They can use video or robotic assistance to sew the ends of your healthy blood vessel onto either side of the blockage in your artery, creating a new path for blood flow. There’s no need to cut through your chest bone, so you’ll recover and get back to your daily activities in as little as a week. Plus, there’s no need for a transfusion and almost no infection risk.

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR)

In this minimally invasive procedure, your surgeon partners with an interventional cardiologist. Together, they use X-ray guidance to thread a catheter through a small incision in your groin or chest to your aortic valve. Using special tools, they implant a replacement aortic valve. Most patients go home within 48 hours of a TAVR procedure.

Transcatheter Mitral Valve Repair with MitraClip® Therapy (TMVR)

During this minimally invasive procedure, your surgeon uses ultrasound guidance to thread a catheter carrying a small device called MitraClip® through an incision in your groin up to your heart. They use MitraClip® to help the mitral valve close better and stop leaking.
