Lynn Cancer Institute Now Treating Patients with MR-Guided Radiation Therapy System

Baptist Health Eugene M. & Christine E. Lynn Cancer Institute

The Eugene M. & Christine E. Lynn Cancer Institute, part of Baptist Health Cancer Care, has begun treating its first patients with the ViewRay MR-Guided® Radiation Therapy System, leaders at the cancer center say. It is now one of only three cancer centers in South Florida to offer this novel technology.

Michael Kasper, M.D., medical director of radiation oncology at Lynn Cancer Institute, says the new technology “revolutionizes our approach for radiation treatment and allows us to deliver lifesaving care to cancer patients” in Palm Beach County and elsewhere. It uses magnetic resonance imaging to precisely target the tumor while sparing healthy surrounding tissue.

“This is a highly sophisticated form of radiation therapy that’s already being used to successfully treat an increasing variety of tumors, particularly difficult to treat tumors such as pancreas and liver cancers,” Dr. Kasper says, noting that colleagues at Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute have been treating patients with the technology since 2018.

“The ViewRay MR-Guided® Radiation Therapy System allows us to deliver extremely precise doses of radiation through the use of continuous MR guidance,” says Dr. Kasper. “This not only offers added patient convenience through shorter radiation courses, it also optimizes efficacy in cancer care by allowing us to see tumors and normal organs and to adapt radiation daily based on their position.”

Lynn Cancer Institute is one of the largest cancer centers in South Florida and is accredited as a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the American College of Surgeons, according to Dr. Kasper. Its cancer team provides the highest level of care for each specific disease site by utilizing the most advanced technology and treatments available, he says.

The ViewRay MR-Guided Radiation Therapy System is housed in Lynn Cancer Institute’s Delray Beach satellite location at 16313 South Military Trail, Dr. Kasper says, where coordination of care is provided by radiation oncologists Hina Saeed, M.D., deputy director of radiation oncology at the Institute, and Youssef Zeidan, M.D., Ph.D.
