Radiation therapy is the use of external radiation beams or particles to safely and effectively treat various cancers and non-cancerous diseases. The beams and particles are delivered to the treatment area in many ways.
External beam radiation uses painless X-ray beams, gamma rays or highly energetic and charged particles (protons or electrons) that focus specifically on the disease site, minimizing injury to healthy tissue. Other forms of radiation can be delivered internally by using radioactive materials that are swallowed, injected or implanted inside the body. They also work by delivering a high dose of radiation directly to the tumor, which causes damage to cancer cells and helps spare nearby healthy tissue.
Radiation works by targeting cancer cells, which divide rapidly and are more sensitive to radiation. The cancerous cells are less able to repair themselves between doses of radiation, so treatment is often delivered over a period of several days or weeks.
Your physician and radiation oncology care team will give you further details, including the duration of your treatment and expected side effects at your first visit.
